Using Remote Tools to Access Files on Personal Computer

This guide assumes you are on a Windows 10 personal computer. If your computer is on a different version of Windows, it may still work, but if you need assistance please contact the Service Desk.

For Macs, see here.

  1. On your computer, open the program called “Remote Desktop Connection”

  1. Click on the “Show Options” button at the bottom to expand the menus.

  1. Click the “Local Resources” tab at the top, then click the “More” button under the “Local devices and resources” section

  1. Check the box for “Drives” and click OK.

  1. Close the “Remote Desktop Connection” window.
  2. Open your web browser of choice (Chrome, Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.)
  3. Navigate to https://tools.med.fsu.edu
  4. Login with your MEDID username and password. Put “MED\” before your username.

  1. Click on the “File Explorer” link. If you are in Internet Explorer, it will prompt you to open the remote app. If you are on a different browser, it will download a .RDP file. Open this file when the download completes.

  1. It should prompt you to sign in again. Put your MEDID username and password, with “MED\” in front of the username again. If you don’t see the username field, you may need to click “More choices” and then “Use a different account”.

  1. Once the remote File Explorer window opens, you should have full access to all of your network drives. You can open files here, and it will open the file on the remote server version of the program. (Example: If you open a Word doc from this remote File Explorer, it will open Word on the server, NOT on your local installation of Word.)
  2. You will see your local computer’s drives as “C on [COMPUTERNAME]” (where [COMPUTERNAME] = Your personal computer’s name). You can copy and paste a file from your network drives to your local computer to work offline, just paste into the local computer’s C: drive. Usually your Documents folder will be located on “C on [COMPUTERNAME]”>Users>[YOUR USERNAME]>Documents
