Remote Tools

The College of Medicine provides individuals with the ability to work from anywhere you have Internet access and a properly configured device (even personal devices). This service allows you to connect to a College of Medicine server that allows you to access many of the most commonly used applications for business use, including Outlook and access to Network File Shares.

See the specific section of this guide for your device with the links below:

Remote Tools - Windows

This guide has 2 sections, “Access via a Browser” and “Access in your Start Menu”. Browser is the fastest way to get up and going. Start Menu takes more setup but will make it easier to get to the tools for future use.

Access via a Browser

  1. Open a web browser and navigate to https://tools.med.fsu.edu/
  2. Enter your MED username and password
    1. Note: You must prefix “MED\” before your username

  1. Select whichever remote app you want to use.
    1. Depending on what browser you use, it will either open immediately, or it will download a .RDP file that you have to open.
  2. Login to the Windows Security window that pops up.
    1. Make sure to enter “MED\” before your username here as well.

  1. Your remote tool will open.

Access in your Start Menu

  1. Open Control Panel

  1. In the top-right, set your “View by” filter to “Small icons” or “Large icons”

  1. Click “RemoteApp and Desktop Connections”

  1. Click “Access RemoteApp and desktops” on the left menu
  2. Enter the following for the connection URL:
    1. https://tools.med.fsu.edu/rdweb/feed/webfeed.aspx

  1. Click Next, then Next again
  2. When prompted, login to your MED account, prefixing your username with “MED\”

  1. Click OK
  2. You will get a confirmation that you successfully set up the connection.

  1. Click Finish
  2. Now when you click on your Start button and scroll to the bottom, you will see a new folder called “Work Resources (RADC)”
  3. You will notice, each of the remote tools has “(Work Resources)” after it’s name. That is how you can differentiate between your locally installed version of Outlook with the remote tools version, if applicable.

Remote Tools - Mac

This guide will show how to set up Remote Tools on an Apple Mac computer. Important note: The tools run on a Windows remote desktop server, so they will be the Windows versions of the apps and may behave differently than a native Mac program.

  1. Start by downloading the Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 app from the Apple App Store

  1. Open the program and click the + button at the top, then select “Add Workspace”

  1. In the URL field, enter the following:
    1. https://tools.med.fsu.edu
  2. It should find the workspace URL and fill in more details below
  3. For User account, you can leave it as “Ask when required” if this is a shared computer. If you are the only user of the computer, you can select “Add user account”
  4. When prompted for a username, prefix your MEDID with “MED\”
  5. Enter a friendly name to make it easy to know which account that is.

  1. Click Add, then click Add again
  2. After it finishes setting up, you will see all the work resources available.
